Movie Review: Lucy - A Mixture of Everything

Lucy – not as transcendent as Tree of Life, not as scientific as Transcendence and not as human as Her, combines a slice of everything but stands out as nothing.

It seems the director is too pretentious in revealing the mystery of the unattainable knowledge and unreachable boundary by amalgamating too many elements in an 1.5 hour movie. The Sci-Fi picks up a bit of this and that with the editing techniques resemble that of the Tree of Life; the idea reminds you of Transcendence and the A.I. verses human relationship parallels that of Her which also employs Scarlet Johansson as the sexy main character. The director's prudence can be seen from the other subtle references to 2001: A Space Odyssey and  other great work.

With lots of actions and a concrete storyline, Lucy is far from reaching the aesthetic craftmanship and fluidity of Tree of Life, in which the story is shown in a series of montage of imagery that transcends audience’s senses to a higher level.  The impact Tree of Life created is beyond words as that’s one of the messages the movie is expressing and that’s the reason why different people comprehend it differently and review it differently. Not a single dialogue or a tagline would people remember after watching Tree of Life but the intensity of sentiment it provokes lasts for a long time. On the contrary, the montage in Lucy is like a visual illustration of scientific theories that the character is explaining simultaneously. Maybe that’s not what the director is trying to achieve but that’s what I perceived.

A part of me like the idea about uncovering physical possibility as I truly believe that once human being unlock the power of the entire brain or when the human mind transcends to a level without physical limitation, interesting things would happen. It will come to a new definition of mankind. Your body doesn’t exist anymore and your soul or your mind could be connected with a network or a super computer. You are nowhere but at the same time you are everywhere. I hope in some future movies, someone could show but not tell a story about this whole new realm of impossibility and develop it further. Her is a very good start and the story is very plausible.

Overall speaking, Lucy is a fun Sci-Fi which won’t make you feel tired after watching as you don’t need to engage in unusual perplexing theories or to deal with complicated science jargon. The beautiful sexy Scarlet Johansson and the exciting scenes from the beginning to the end ensure audience an experience of pure joy. Recommended.
